I, for one, appreciate you being so honest, Dave. It's not easy trying to navigate the comics world. I often feel doubts, disappointments, and a frustration building inside me that I'm not doing enough, quickly enough. You opened my eyes that there is no pressure from outside. It's all internal. Thank you for that revelation. I've decided to slow down, and learn. Take the pressure off myself and learn about the craft of writing comics, taking online classes to start with. It's helping a lot.
You've made huge strides in the right direction and your trajectory is definitely upwards. I don't think it would harm you to take a year off comics, to be honest. If you needed to.
Time seems to pass quickly hence we get the panicked thought that our output isn't big enough or fast enough but I don't think your audience is going to disappear at all, even if you didn't produce anything for a year or even two. Even 5!
Coming back from time away (a bit like a wrestler) can give you a boost and a freshness.
Whatever you decide to do, I wish you success and calmness on the mind waves. Thank you again for your honesty.
Dave, your writing has brought me a lot of pleasure this past year (both Killtopia and your posts here). If you haven’t read it already I recommend The War of Art - a short read that offers a lot of mental tools for dealing with the feelings you’re experiencing as a creative person. Looking forward to what springs from your great imagination next, and wishing you all the best for 2025!
