Do you really need to table at comic conventions?
It’s a common question I’ve seem online. So let’s break it down…
Hello and welcome to an all-new premium comic guide. Whether you’re a long time subscriber or you’ve just upgraded recently, thank you for your support. It really does mean a lot :)
Okay, so…
Why am I talking about comic cons?
I’m writing this guide now as comic cons are a subject I’ve seen debated on social media a few times over the years. That debate seems to be heating up more than ever in 2024.
And regarding my experience with conventions; I’ve exhibited my comic books at conventions since Glasgow Comic Con in 2014, and a lot has changed in that time (like, a LOT). Many of these changes are positive, while many are less so. Some changes are unfortunate reflections of the times and economy we live in.
Over the last 10 years, I’ve found myself torn between two opposing states of mind. Depending on the day, and which way the wind’s blowing, I’m either really feeling the value of exhibiting at conventions or I’m questioning why I keep on doing them. I’ll explain why later.
My aim with this guide is to help you understand the logistics of exhibiting at comic conventions better, the pros and cons you’ll likely encounter, and some things you should know to have a smoother time at shows as a comic writer or artist.
An important disclaimer
Before I continue, I have to state clearly that not all comic conventions are created equal. These shows are seriously hard work to organise, and for the best part, they’re all run by passionate people who want attendees to have a great time.
I’m personally friends with several people who organise comic cons, and I’ve heard so many horror stories from them over the years about what’s involved. From technical and logistical nightmares, to venue problems and rising costs, con organisers have to juggle and solve a million issues to ensure their show happens and that attendees have a fun time.
In my experience, convention organisers are trying their best and putting in a level of work that would make most of us run for the hills. So I have to be clear:
I don’t want any of this guide to read like I’m dunking on their hard work and best intentions.
Okay, with all of this scene-setting out of the way, let’s get started!
